Connection in Troubling Times: How Small Encounters Make the World More Beautiful
As I stroll through our backyard with our dogs, I’m surprised anew every day. A sea of flowers in colors and scents unfolds before me, while cows graze peacefully in the fresh green grass. Calves have been born again. A new life, so natural and hopeful. In our own garden, the flower circles are in full bloom. And when I walk along the beach, the sun sparkles in the ocean, as if it wants to remind me of everything that is right. This is how we enjoy our peaceful world.
How Our Peaceful World Will Progress
A new season has begun. New energy, new encounters, new stories. There is so much beauty to experience every day. If you allow it. Suddenly, our peaceful world is disrupted when you look at the news. War rhetoric, power struggles, and leaders who seem to act out of self-interest rather than connection. On International Women’s Day, I wonder: would the world look different if more women were in power? More listening, more connecting, more focused on caring for the whole?
Contribute in Your Own Living Environment
The threat of war is unfortunately not new. I was born during the Cold War and as a child, I felt my parents’ concerns. Then came the Gulf Wars and now the war in Ukraine, which also makes tension palpable in Europe. What can we do? Perhaps little on a global scale, but you can create your own peaceful world at home.
Lagos Women in Motion on Women’s Day
Right now, it is important to focus on connection, on your own small peaceful world. That’s why my friend Claudia and I are organizing a networking event for female entrepreneurs today, especially for Women’s Day. Lagos Women in Motion. By truly meeting each other, hearing each other’s stories, and learning from one another, something valuable is born: connection and growth. The always warm and welcoming Patricia from Gelato e Amore opens the doors of her charming café for us and treats us to drinks and delicious snacks.
Singing Creates Harmony and Transcends Differences
Another powerful example of connection is singing together. As many know, I sing in the choir Cantus Nortada, which brings me immense joy. People from different countries, with diverse backgrounds, come together. What binds us is the music. Singing creates harmony, opens hearts, and transcends differences.
It’s the Small Things That Can Change the World
Instead of losing ourselves in fear and endless news, we can also choose proximity. Reach out to your friends. Make a small, loving gesture for someone who is struggling. Smile at a stranger on the street and say hello. Organize a walk. Walking together in nature effortlessly creates connection. Ultimately, that’s what we all long for. Perhaps more than we sometimes dare to admit.
A Café as a Refuge
Nearby, there’s a coffee nook, Everyday People Café, run by warm-hearted people. You are welcomed as if you are coming home. They know your name, your favorite coffee, and along with a warm drink, you always receive a dose of positivity. Such places remind us how important human contact is. It also inspires us to open our B&B to all kinds of people, guests, and locals as a second home and a space where connections emerge naturally.

We have choices. Unlike people in countries where freedom is not a given, we can move freely, dream, and create. That is why now is the time to live life to the fullest. To focus on loving partners, family, friends, and not to forget your faithful four-legged friends.
